What to Expect at Your First Physical Therapy Evaluation
Dr. Tonia Thornton, DPT
Board-Certified Physical Therapist
If you've never been to a physical therapist — or if your only experience was at a busy clinic where you saw a different person each visit — you might not know what to expect. At Peak Swing PT, every evaluation is different from the typical PT experience. Here's what a first visit looks like.
It's 60 Minutes, One-on-One
Your entire evaluation is a dedicated hour with Dr. Tonia Thornton, DPT. No aides, no students, no juggling between patients. You get her full, undivided attention the entire time. This allows for a much more thorough assessment than the typical 15-20 minute insurance-driven evaluation.
We Start with Your Story
Before any physical testing, Dr. Thornton will ask about your health history, your current symptoms, your activity level, and — most importantly — your goals. Whether you want to swing a golf club without pain, get back on the pickleball court, or simply eat comfortably again, your plan is built around what matters to you.
A Full Movement Assessment
This is the core of the evaluation. Dr. Thornton will assess how your body moves — looking at range of motion, strength, stability, coordination, and movement patterns. For sport-specific evaluations, this includes video analysis of your swing or movement mechanics.
The goal is to find the root cause of your issue, not just where it hurts. Pain in one area is often caused by a restriction or weakness somewhere else in the chain.
You Leave with a Plan
By the end of your visit, you'll have a clear diagnosis and a personalized Plan of Care. This includes what's causing your issue, what we're going to do about it, how many sessions you'll likely need, and exercises you can start doing at home right away.

Why One-on-One Care Matters
In high-volume PT clinics, therapists often see 2-3 patients at once. That model works for simple cases, but it doesn't allow for the depth of assessment and treatment that complex sports injuries and chronic pain require. One-on-one care means better outcomes, fewer total sessions, and a faster return to what you love.
